The best next-generation firewalls in 2026 are Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet FortiGate and Check Point Quantum for most enterprises, with Cisco Secure Firewall, Juniper SRX (now part of HPE), Sophos Firewall and SonicWall as strong options for specific needs and budgets. Palo Alto and Fortinet were named Leaders in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Hybrid Mesh Firewall, and Check Point had the highest security effectiveness in the most recent independent enterprise firewall test from CyberRatings.org. The right choice depends on your size, your team's skills and how much you want to spend on yearly subscriptions.

I have deployed firewalls for clients since 2008 and run pfSense in front of the Proxmox cluster in my homelab. This guide compares the commercial NGFW vendors honestly, using vendor documentation, analyst recognition and independent test results that I link at the end. I do not quote prices or throughput numbers that vendors do not publish.

What is a next-generation firewall?

A next-generation firewall (NGFW) does everything a traditional stateful firewall does, such as filtering by IP address, port and protocol, NAT and VPN, and adds inspection of what the traffic actually is:

  • Application awareness: identifies applications (for example Microsoft 365, BitTorrent or a specific SaaS) regardless of port.
  • User and identity awareness: policies by user or group from Active Directory, Entra ID or RADIUS, not just by IP.
  • Intrusion prevention (IPS): blocks exploits with signatures and behavioural detection.
  • URL and DNS filtering: blocks malicious or unwanted sites by category and reputation.
  • TLS/SSL inspection: decrypts and inspects encrypted traffic, which is now most of it.
  • Threat intelligence and sandboxing: cloud lookups and detonation of unknown files.
  • Central management: one policy across many firewalls, increasingly from a cloud console.

In 2025 Gartner replaced its network firewall Magic Quadrant with a hybrid mesh firewall category: firewalls delivered as hardware, virtual machines, cloud firewalls and firewall-as-a-service, all managed from one cloud management plane. That is why vendor marketing in 2026 talks about "hybrid mesh" and "platforms" rather than single boxes.

NGFW vs UTM

UTM (unified threat management) is the older, small-business term for an all-in-one firewall with antivirus, spam and web filtering. Today the lines are blurred: Sophos, Fortinet, SonicWall and others sell the same product to both markets. In practice, "UTM" usually means an SMB appliance with bundled services and "NGFW" means the same technology at enterprise scale with more granular policy.

Independent test results: CyberRatings.org 2025 enterprise firewall test

CyberRatings.org, with NSS Labs running the tests, published its 2025 enterprise firewall results on November 5, 2025. The test used methodology v3.0 with encrypted traffic, 3,326 exploits, 11,311 malware samples and 5,752 evasion techniques. The original results:

Firewall tested Rating Security effectiveness False positive accuracy
Check Point CP-CGS-9300 Recommended 99.59% 99.35%
Versa Networks CSG5200 Recommended 99.43% 99.63%
Juniper Networks SRX4300 Recommended 99.16% 98.43%
Forcepoint 2210 Neutral 99.53% 95.22%
Fortinet FortiGate-200G Caution 79.24% 99.41%
Cisco Firepower 2130 Caution 57.34% 79.94%
Palo Alto Networks PA-1410 Caution 46.37% 99.66%

On November 25, 2025, CyberRatings published follow-on results: after Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks submitted new builds that addressed the evasion weaknesses, both the FortiGate-200G and the PA-1410 moved from Caution to Recommended.

How to read this: one test, one model and one software build per vendor. It is very useful for showing that evasion handling and TLS inspection differ a lot between products, and that vendors fix issues when they are found. It is not a ranking of every model a vendor sells. Ask your shortlisted vendors for their latest independent results for the model and software version you will actually buy.

The leading NGFW vendors in more detail

Palo Alto Networks

Palo Alto Networks built its firewall around application-based policy (App-ID) and is the reference point many enterprises compare against. Its line spans PA-Series hardware (from the PA-400 Series for branches to the PA-5450 for data centers), VM-Series virtual firewalls, CN-Series for Kubernetes and Cloud NGFW for AWS, managed with Panorama or Strata Cloud Manager. Security services such as Advanced Threat Prevention, Advanced WildFire and Advanced URL Filtering are separate subscriptions.

Choose it if you want the deepest application and user control and have the budget and staff to use it. Watch out for total cost: the subscriptions add up.

Fortinet FortiGate

FortiGate covers everything from small branch boxes to data center systems, using Fortinet's own security processors to keep inspection fast. FortiOS is the same across hardware, VMs, cloud and FortiGate-as-a-Service, and FortiManager handles central policy. Fortinet sells three FortiGuard service bundles: ATP (IPS, antivirus, sandbox, application control), UTP (adds URL/DNS filtering and anti-botnet) and Enterprise (adds DLP, inline malware prevention and IoT detection).

Choose it if you need strong performance per dollar, many branches, or SD-WAN in the same box. Watch out for patching discipline: like every edge device vendor, Fortinet publishes frequent security advisories, so plan regular upgrades.

Check Point Quantum

Check Point focuses on prevention: its Quantum gateways use ThreatCloud intelligence and sandboxing, and its central management, with policy rollout and rollback, is one of the most mature for large rule bases. The range runs from Quantum Spark for small businesses to Quantum Force and Maestro for hyperscale clusters.

Choose it if threat prevention and audited policy management matter most, as in finance or government. Watch out for complexity at the management layer for small teams.

Cisco Secure Firewall

Cisco Secure Firewall (Firewall Threat Defense software on the 200, 1000, 1200, 3100, 4200 and 6100 series, plus virtual and cloud editions) uses Talos threat intelligence, SnortML for zero-day detection and an Encrypted Visibility Engine that classifies encrypted traffic without decrypting it. Management is through Security Cloud Control or the on-premises Firewall Management Center.

Choose it if your network and SOC are already Cisco. Watch out for the 2025 CyberRatings result for the Firepower 2130, and ask for current test data on the model you are buying.

Juniper SRX (HPE)

The Juniper SRX Series, with vSRX and cSRX for virtual and container use, is now part of HPE Networking after HPE closed its acquisition of Juniper on July 2, 2025. The SRX4300 earned a Recommended rating with 99.16% security effectiveness in the 2025 CyberRatings test.

Choose it if you run Juniper or HPE networking. Watch out for roadmap changes as the products move into HPE's portfolio.

Sophos Firewall

Sophos Firewall on XGS appliances is aimed at small and mid-size organizations: a clear interface, Xstream Protection bundles, and Synchronized Security that shares health status with Sophos endpoint protection. It is MDR-ready, so Sophos analysts can block threats on the firewall through Active Threat Response, a stronger offer since Sophos completed its acquisition of Secureworks in February 2025. Sophos also offers a free Home Edition.

Choose it if you have a small IT team and want firewall, endpoint and MDR from one vendor. Watch out for scale limits compared with enterprise vendors.

SonicWall

SonicWall targets SMBs, distributed branches and MSPs, with TZ Series desktop appliances, built-in SD-WAN, zero-touch deployment and Capture ATP cloud sandboxing. In September 2025 SonicWall disclosed that an unauthorized party accessed firewall configuration backup files of customers who used its MySonicWall cloud backup service; SonicWall published tools and guidance for resetting credentials.

Choose it if price per site matters and you work with an MSP. Watch out for following SonicWall's security notices closely and resetting credentials if your devices were listed.

Other vendors worth a look

  • Barracuda CloudGen Firewall: strong for distributed and hybrid cloud networks with built-in SD-WAN.
  • Forcepoint NGFW: clustering and central management across many sites.
  • Versa Networks: NGFW as part of a SASE and SD-WAN platform.
  • Huawei USG / HiSecEngine: common in some regions, with availability restricted in others.
  • Cloud-native firewalls (AWS Network Firewall, Azure Firewall, Google Cloud NGFW): good for cloud-only workloads, managed separately from your on-premises firewalls.

How to choose an NGFW: SMB vs enterprise

For small and mid-size businesses (up to a few hundred users):

  1. Size for threat protection throughput, not firewall throughput. Datasheets show a big firewall number and a much smaller number with IPS, application control and malware protection on. Use the second one, with TLS inspection on if you plan to use it.
  2. Prefer bundled subscriptions (FortiGuard UTP, Sophos Xstream Protection, SonicWall bundles) so you do not discover missing features later.
  3. Choose simple management your team can run: cloud management, sensible defaults, good reports.
  4. Think about MDR or an MSP if nobody watches the alerts.
  5. Budget for 3 to 5 years, including subscription renewals and a hardware refresh.

For enterprises:

  1. Start from architecture: data center, campus, branches, cloud and remote users. A hybrid mesh platform with one policy across all of them saves more than any single feature.
  2. Run a proof of concept with your real traffic and TLS inspection enabled.
  3. Ask for independent test results for the exact model and software version (CyberRatings, other labs) and check the vendor's security advisory history.
  4. Check integrations: identity provider, SIEM or XDR, SD-WAN, SASE and automation APIs.
  5. Compare total cost across the same term and service set; most vendors do not publish prices, so quotes are the only fair comparison.

NGFW for home and homelab

At home you usually want application control, IPS and filtering without enterprise subscriptions, so for home and homelab use I recommend a free option:

  • OPNsense with Zenarmor: a fully open source firewall plus a plugin for application control; see how Zenarmor adds NGFW features to OPNsense.
  • pfSense CE: what I run at home, with pfBlockerNG for DNS and IP blocking and Suricata for IPS; see pfSense vs OPNsense.
  • Sophos Firewall Home Edition: commercial features free for home use, limited to 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM.
  • Arista NG Firewall (formerly Untangle): a free tier with firewall, IPS and OpenVPN; see my Untangle NG Firewall guide.

Free and open source NGFW options

If you are comparing NGFWs because of budget, or you want full control, the open source route is a different decision with different trade-offs: no licence fees, but you provide the support. I compare OPNsense, pfSense CE, IPFire, OpenWrt, VyOS and the free commercial editions in detail in the best open source firewalls in 2026.

If you want to learn the skills behind any of these products, my pfSense training guide lists the administrator topics that carry over to every firewall: rules, NAT, VLANs, VPNs and IPS.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best next generation firewall?+

There is no single best NGFW for everyone. In 2026, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet and Check Point are the vendors most often rated as leaders: Palo Alto and Fortinet were both named Leaders in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Hybrid Mesh Firewall, and Check Point scored the highest security effectiveness (99.59%) in the 2025 CyberRatings.org enterprise firewall test. Fortinet usually wins on price and performance, Palo Alto on application control and cloud management depth, and Check Point on threat prevention and central management. For small businesses, Sophos, FortiGate entry models and SonicWall are common choices.

What is a next-generation firewall (NGFW)?+

A next-generation firewall is a firewall that inspects traffic beyond IP addresses and ports. On top of stateful filtering, NAT and VPN it identifies applications and users, runs intrusion prevention, filters URLs, inspects encrypted TLS traffic and uses threat intelligence or sandboxing to block malware, all in one device or service with central management.

What is the difference between a UTM and an NGFW?+

The terms overlap heavily. UTM (unified threat management) traditionally meant an all-in-one box for small businesses with firewall, antivirus, spam and web filtering. NGFW emphasises application and user awareness, intrusion prevention and TLS inspection at enterprise scale. Most products sold today, from Sophos to Fortinet, do both.

What is the best NGFW for home use?+

For home and homelab use, a free option usually makes more sense than a commercial NGFW with yearly subscriptions. OPNsense with the Zenarmor plugin adds application control to a free open source firewall, pfSense CE with pfBlockerNG and Suricata covers DNS filtering and IPS, and Sophos Firewall Home Edition gives commercial features free for home use, limited to 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM.

What is a hybrid mesh firewall?+

Hybrid mesh firewall is Gartner's term, introduced with its first Magic Quadrant for the category in 2025, for a firewall platform that spans hardware appliances, virtual firewalls and cloud or firewall-as-a-service options, all managed from one cloud-based management plane. Gartner's 2025 and 2026 firewall Magic Quadrants use this category.

How much does a next generation firewall cost?+

It depends on throughput, model and subscriptions. Most vendors sell the appliance plus yearly security subscriptions (threat prevention, URL filtering, sandboxing, support), and the subscriptions often cost more over three to five years than the hardware. Few vendors publish prices; most list Contact sales, so get quotes for the same term and the same services from at least two vendors.
